Cardwell to Seymour, No. 531 December 1864 I have had the honor to receive your Despatch, No. 56 of the 4th of October, written in acknowledgement of mine No. 30 of the 1st of August. I have every reason to approve of the moderation an[d] justice enforced by you during the late Expeditions into the country of the Chilicoten Indians. I do not understand the meaning of the paragraph in which you speak of inviting every white man to shoot every Indian he might meet. I shall rely on your continued adherence to the line of conduct hitherto pursued by you, which appears to have been perfectly consistent with humanity and good policy.
