Contexts of the Franklin Expedition
In 1845 Britain sent two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror under the command of Sir John Franklin to the Canadian Arctic. The ships and the entire party of 129 men disappeared and never returned. The mystery of Franklin's fateful last expedition occurred in a place that brought together members of two very different cultures – Inuit and European. Understanding the differences between these cultures and environments can help us better understand the Franklin Mystery, giving us clues as to what might have happened on that fateful expedition.
