16 October 1878
Carroll
vs
Donnellys
[...] On Monday morning last I was walking pass the Donnellys place [...] On passing the Donnellys place I saw John Donnelly came out of the house, and commenced ploughing in the field. He saw me and called saying he wanted to talk to me. I paid no attention to him. He kept calling after me. I told him I did not want to talk to him. I had too muh respect for myself. I told him he would see me in the afternoon at Whalen Corners. He told me he wanted to fight me. I told him I did not want to fight but if he would meet me at Whalens Corners, I would fight him and lick all the Donnellys. He made a race at me. I told him if he came at me I would shoot him. I drew a Revolver on him and told him to keep off. I saw Thomas & William come running out of the house. [...] William & John kept urging Thomas on to come out on the road & thrash me. He called me a coward & a thief. Their mother called me a son of a bitch. [...]
