The examination of Joseph Berehill taken on oath this 10th day of March in the year of our Lord 1876 at London, in the City aforesaid, before the undersigned, I'm one of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said City & County in the presence and hearing of James Donelly at the Village Lucan in the County of Middlesex on the 17th day of September 1875 did assault beat and Wound him the said J Berehill
This Depondent Joseph Berehill upon his oath saith as follows:-
I lived in London Township on the 17 Sept last I was in Waklers Hotel in Lucan on 17 September 1875 between the hours of 7 & 9 o'clock PM. I had been in Walkers Hotel about half an hour before I saw the prisoner. I was talking to Walker who was inside the bar — and I was stading by the bar talking to him when James Keefe came in the door followed by the Defendant & Thomas Donnelly who ame close behind him. James Keefe followed by defenant came immediately up to me, & struk me with a stone on the head, cutting my hatband & hat through and raised a mark on my head — at same time he seized me by the beard. The blow stunned me. I might have fallen from it but from the hold he had on me. I struggled with Keefe and would have got not of him but for the Defendant who struck me with a Stone and also with a chair and and as well as his brother. The Prisoner was assisting Keefe, who I thought was trying to take my life. I had three wounds in my head from stone.,my head was severely cut the scars of which I had then, two of my teeth were knocked right out with a stone, and and there [illegible] to that It came out afterward from a Blow of Stone on my shoulder was severely injured and my right arm disable & it remains disabled so that I have not the proper use of it now. He pulled out part of my beard. I heard the Donnelly call out, "Give it to him" several times during the attack. Prisoner James Donnelly was one of the foremost amongst those assisting Keefe. The wounds in my head were dressed by Dr. Hassock --afterwords.
