Nicolas-Auguste Guillet de Chaumont
Born in France around 1695, Nicolas-Auguste Guillet de Chaumont landed in Nouvelle-France as a soldier, but all the same has somewhat of an education. He became a notary and assumes with little distinction the duties of clerk, king’s prosecutor and lieutenant general (judge) in MontrĂ©al. He does not excel at his tasks and it is possible that he is, as noted by Intendant Gilles Hocquart, a “very narrow-minded man.” He is one of the four counsellors called in to advise the lieutenant general concerning the guilt of the accused and the sentence to be imposed on her.
