Charles-René Gaudron de Chèvremont
Born in France in 1702, Charles-René Gaudron de Chèvremont sets foot in New France in 1726 as secretary to the governor. Settling in Montréal, he is appointed royal notary and his clients include the most prominent families in the city. In April 1734, at the time of the fire, Gaudron is appointed seigneurial judge on île Jésus, close to Montréal. Although of modest fortune, he has valuable contacts within the colonial administration, notably with Beauharnois, the governor.
Gaudron de Chèvremont suffers major losses as a result of the fire. He will be one of the four notaries called upon to counsel the lieutenant general on the issue of the guilt of the accused and the sentence to be handed down.
