Beauharnois and Hocquart, letter to the minister, 18 October 1735.
18 October
Regarding
the gratification granted to the hotel Dieu in Montreal; regarding the negress
and the man named Thibault.
We have received the Letter that you were so gracious to write us On April
12 last.
We also have had the honour of writing in our response to the king's report
that we have informed the Sisters of Montreal of the gratification of 10000
# that his Majesty has granted them, and of the 1500 # from the Wealth of
the Domain that They will Benefit from As Of the 1st of January
1736. Until their house and hospital are restored; We have also rendered an
Account of the condition of the house and hospital, and of the measures taken
by the Sisters in order to be able to receive patients and
lodge there this year. Attached is A report of the State of the house and
of the funds that were put to Use; We will continue to work towards its prompt
restoration. We seized upon the initial Impression the Fire made on the Minds
of the people to incite them to Donate to the hospital; Indeed They provided
Aid in Time and materials, but this came to an end; now merely very slight
donations are made for the subsistence of the Sisters and the Paupers.
The sum of 2454 # 5 sols 2 deniers that was
taken from the king's stores for individuals included in the Fire in Montreal,
whom you most willingly compensated, has been used to reimburse costs; there
is also the 1060 # 19 sols for implements and medication that M. hocquart
supplied from the king's stores for the succour of ill soldiers in the new
hospital. [...]
