[...] Windows at the very beginning of the seventeenth century were invariably of the casement type. Sash-windows were first used in England about 1630. [...] Casement windows, on the other hand, persisted through the century. [...] It appears fairly certain that the double-hung sash-window with pulleys, weights, and cords did not appear in America until after 1685. [...]
