November Wednesday 30 1898
Helped Peter to pack etc. Mr Esdaile & Harold dined with us. Peter left in the evening in tome to catch the 10.30 Chicago express. I had a sore throat & besides was afraid of disgracing myself by dissolving into tears at the station so did not go down. His friends turned out in full force to bid him farewell. Mama went down to the station, her first outing since the beginning of the month & is in consequence laid up again today, her knee is very swollen. I don’t know when I have felt anything more that this parting from Peter still six months is not eternity & if he only be quite cured in that time we shall have much to be thankful for.
