Alastair Stewart (CCF. Winnipeg North) said today in the House of Commons that Herbert Norman, Canadian ambassador to Egypt, was “murdered by slander just as surely as if someone had stuck a knife in his back.”
One could have heard a pin drop as Mr. Stewart rose during the question period to ask Hon. Lester Pearson, minister of external affairs, to comment on the “lamentable tragedy” in Cairo.
“Murder has spoken.” Mr. Stewart said in a harsh voice.
John Diefenbaker, Progressive Conservative leader, urged Hon. Robert Winters, minister of public works, to take the unusual step of ordering the flag over the parliament buildings to be flown at half mast in memory of Mr. Norman.
