Dear Sir,
I hope you will believe that my sympathy for your family is not exhausted, altho' I disapprove highly of some recent proceedings to which I propose to direct your attention. I now particularly refer to the conduct of your brother Robert, in which I fear you are to some extent backing him, towards the Salvation Army people. Whatever you may think of their methods they are endeavouring to do good, & have accomplished much good here & elsewhere. At any rate in a free country they are entitled to protection & must have it fully accorded to them. Robert is apparently pursuing a similar course to that which led to such fearful consequences in Biddulph, & I hope he will desist, as I intend to see the law upheld if possible. I write this in a friendly spirit & hope it will have a beneficial effect upon Robert & all others acting with him or for him.
