Ordinance by Jacques-Alexis Fleury Deschambault for the installation of suitable ladders on houses, 10 January 1709.
As The king’s prosecutor at our seat has impressed upon us, numerous inhabitants
in This city Neglect, in violation of the police Regulation Rendered by Our
seigneurs at the Conseil souverain in quebec, to have Their houses Equipped
with Ladders as a precaution against Fires that could occur because of the
lack of ladders. We order that all owners of houses, or Their Lessees on their
behalf, have the said houses Equipped with Suitable Ladders
according to the regulation of Our said seigneurs at the Conseil within
fifteen Days from the Day of The publication of the present, Under penalty
of a ten Livres fine Against the Said Contraveners, which penalty will be
enforced beyond the said period by Action taken against Their belongings &
by other Reasonable means [dues ?] & this will be Read, published &
posted next Sunday Following the High mass at the door of the parish Church
of This city & at other Customary locations. Ordered & done &
passed at ville marie by we the aforementioned Lieutenant general on The
tenth of January seventeen Hundred and nine.
